Hyperbole

Hyperbole is language that is obviously exaggerated and is not meant to be taken literally. Writers often use hyperbole for emphasis or to be funny.

Examples:

  • John asked a million questions.
  • You could have knocked me over with a feather.
  • He’s as quiet as a mouse.
  • Now, I’ve seen EVERYTHING.

Hyperbole, just like metaphor and simile, is a type of figurative language. Oftentimes, metaphors and similes incorporate hyperbole. Adding hyperboles in your sentences can make your writing more engaging.

For example,
Sentence without hyperbole: People heard John screaming when a cockroach came into the room.
Sentence with hyperbole: The entire state of Virginia heard John screaming when a cockroach came into the room.
